The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari
The Movie I have analyzed is the Cabinet of Dr.Caligari, which is a German expressionist horror film by Robert Wiene, that was made in the 1920s.
The analysis of the movie reveals 2 main themes, which are 'dementia and psychosis'.
These are hinted at through out the movie, but are only disclosed to the audience, toward the end of the movie, as a plot twist.

The scene that discloses the plot twist begins at 1:17:17, were the protagonist Francis tries to warn everyone that Dr. Caligari is evil.

Insane asylum

Here the audience realizes that all the characters that were in the first portion of the movie are actually residents of an insane asylum. In my opinion this is the most important part of the film, since it slowly convinces the audience that everything they saw before that, actually never happened.

Wiene does this by utilizing many film techniques such as change in gradual change in music, as well as different types of shots, to show the emotion of the main characters, and the bystanders.

Francis shocked after no-one believes him
Wiene, shows us the film through Francis' eyes. This becomes evident when we see a close up shot of Dr.Caligari, who minutes before had been portrayed as a dirty and unclean man, however now he seemed composed and clean. Hence, the audience is hinted at once more, that first part of the film was all taken from Francis' imagination. This contribute to the overall reveal of the plot, and builds up the suspense of the film.
After the plot is revealed.
Before the plot was revealed.
To further analyze the film, the floor plan and section  below should be looked at, since it helps to illustrate movement and different shot positions through out the scene.
The camera placements also show the different shots that were taken, camera 1 shows the wide shot that was taken to show the whole asylum. Camera 2 shows the close up shot of Francis when he was shocked, and Camera 3 shows the close ups taken of  Dr. Caligari walking down the stairs.
Analyzing this axonometric drawing is also important, since it shows the history of the film and how it was made. The film was made in a theatrical style, hence most of its background walls and structures are fake. Arguably, the simplicity of the set also reflects on the films theme of insanity. Since most of the sets build for the film are made in weird geometrical patterns that are unrealistic, it can be concluded that this is due to the fact that Francis has not left the asylum in a long time. Meaning, Francis has forgotten what the outside world looks like, unlike the asylum, which makes more sense than any other structure due to fact it is were Fancis lives. In this way, Director Robert Wiene, utilizes architecture to show the theme of insanity. Again this contributes to the reveling of the plot twist.
Although the film was filmed a long time ago, the film has been restored and as a result has kept an amazing quality of video. Nevertheless, the film itself is has been blurred, trough the effect of Bokeh. This was done to highlight what ever/however was in the middle. It also made the theatrical walls appear more realistic, and made them harder to spot. This was done mostly to show emotion, and also shows foreshadowing the plot twist.

Francis when no one believes that Dr.Caligari is a killer.. (severe bokeh used to show emotion)
As a final attempt to show that the asylum part of the film is the most important part of the film, I have attempted to recreate it as a realist version. The most challenging part of creating this collage was the patterns in the walls, since they were very detailed and hard to draw. Nevertheless, the collage proves that if the asylum was to be built as a realistic set, it would be one of the only parts of the film, that would make any sense, in a realistic style.
In conclusion the scene at 1:17:17/ of the asylum, is the most critical and important part of the film. This is proven by the themes showed by director Robert Wiene through the use of many film techniques, to show the plot twist that explains the whole movie to the audience.
Written Analysis
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a horror film that should be watched by everyone and not only horror enthusiasts.  This movie is historic relic and marks a time of innovation in the film industry, hence it should be treated as any other old film.  In this analysis I will be covering the most important scene, In my opinion, which happens toward the end at around 1:17:17 into the film. The major plot twist will be discussed in this article, therefore I’d advice anyone who hasn’t watched the film, to watch it before reading this.
The movie takes place in the German town of Holstenwal, where a lot of the structures seem to be disfigured and unconventional, this was done in purpose by director, Robert Wenie since the whole move was meant to be a delusion of the character Francis, hence it made no sense to purchase expensive and realistic sets. This plot twist is revealed in the scene at the asylum, after Francis finishes telling his story to the man he was telling to. This scene shows emotion through a variety of means, this includes change in music and through different close-up shots of the main characters to show their emotion. The plot twist is also revealed through the architecture, since the asylums walls and patterns are the only ones that make sense in the whole movie. This is the most important part of the film, since it is the one where the audience realises why the prior fraction of the film was the way it was. The plot twist however, is revealed slowly, which makes the audience ask themselves ‘was all that real? Or was it all fake?’. The plot twist is then confirmed a few minutes later when Dr. Caligari says ‘I finally understand his delusion, now I know how to help him’, this is the last prove that Dr. Caligari, is in fact a Doctor that helps people rather than murder them.

Overall, the plot twist is introduced slowly and subtlety, with foreshadows throughout the movie. This makes it an amazing and thrilling horror movie to see.  In my opinion Director Robert Winie was a pioneer of the 1920s, since he created a movie that was way ahead of its time. This concept was done in such a way that, it enhanced the movie and made it better than if it had just been the story Francis imagined. Hence, the plot twist makes this movie a 11 out of 10 film, that should be watched by everyone and should possibly be remade, as a modern adaptation.
